Tonight's Mashup
Get Right Back to the One That Got Away

Sources Used:
Katy Perry - "The One That Got Away" (acapella)
Maxine Nightingale - "Right Back to Where We Started From"

Big-ass bell bottoms and huge afros meet post-teenage angst. Katy Perry, old and grey, looks back on her life and realizes that she should have told those bell bottoms what they meant to her.

I got the idea for this one from the opening 4 beats of "The One That Got Away." The four-on-the-floor kick drum just reminded me of Maxine Nightingale's hit from the 70s (prominently featured in the movie "Slap Shot," for you hockey afficionados). So I had to leave that part in verbatim from Katy Perry's track. After that, it all goes ridiculously wrong.

Enjoy!

Very interresting idea. I really like the 70's !
I Know the sources very well & I don't know if it's me but sometimes
It sound strange (into the chorus). That's why I prefer to leave the other
comment about this. I'm maybe wrong on this one ;-)

BTW nice work on the cover too ;-)
We are family ...

Thanks for the comments! Yeah, there's not a ton of instrumental stuff to work with in the Maxine Nightingale song, so some of the edits slightly funky. That, and this is one of those situations where the verse of one song actually lines up better with the chords from the chorus of the other. So it may feel a little backwards, but I kinda like it that way. It adds to the "these songs really do NOT go together" part of the equation that makes mashups fun. :D

Appreciate the listen!

Cheers,
TM

I don't know why that's so amusing to me. :)

I apologize in advance for not having anything technical to say about the mashup, but..

I really enjoyed listening to it, looking at the very well done artwork and thinking:

1. I really should watch Slap Shot again
2. There's ANOTHER movie which has 'Right Back Where We Started From' in the end credits and it's mildly remixed, using filters and such... I can't remember which movie off-hand, and the remix wasn't available to grab anywhere when I checked for it.
3. Katy Perry looks good even WITH that unfortunate hair.
4. 'Tonight's Mashup' is a good, solid name.
5. "Katy Perry, old and grey, looks back on her life and realizes that she should have told those bell bottoms what they meant to her". HAHA!

Thanks for such a pleasant whirlwind of thoughts! :)

Hehe...you HAVE seen the video for "The One That Got Away," right? :D

1. I really should watch Slap Shot again

It stands up to repeat viewing. I need to work "I swear to god, I'm gonna dangle it" into a mash somewhere.

3. Katy Perry looks good even WITH that unfortunate hair.

Maxine Nightingale's not looking too bad these days, either. http://www.maxinenightingale.biz/ But yeah, it's a style from a different time, that's for sure...hehe

4. 'Tonight's Mashup' is a good, solid name.

Why, thank you! :D Glad you enjoyed the tune.

Cheers,
TM

Fantastic! I loved this mashup from start to finish. I love that Maxine Nightingale song so much, sometimes I search it out and give it play just to switch my brain off and do some mental bouncing around. Combine that with the guilty pleasure Perry-Gaga factor, and I'm set.

The only thing that lets it down is what sounds like a DIY acapella, but it's still a goddam bonafide certified keeper for me.

Thanks!

Thank you! glad you like it. As for the source -- yep, it's a DIY. That's the only version I came across, which surprised me a little because it seems like most of Katy Perry's studio acapellas are available in the wild. Have you seen a studio pella for this? LMK and I'll swap it out. Very easy to do!

First up - for using Maxine Nightingale.... a HUGE HELL YEAH! Wow, I hadn't heard that track in years, but you've brought a smile back to my face hearing it.

Secondly - for using Katy Perry.... another HUGE HELL YEAH!! She's my guilty pleasure when it comes to pop mashups.

I really enjoyed this track - it's a wee bit odd though, in that I believe they are in key, but there is something slightly ajar between them... I think one or the other file may be literally a cent or two flat against the other, which is a minor gripe that doesn't distract from the overall enjoyment and cheesy grin this gave me.

Top work sir!
