Mashstix Mash-Off #74 | Eurovision Tribute - satis5d WINS!

Post Wed May 01, 2019 12:47 pm

Image

This month, the Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Tel Aviv, Israel, my home town :1smiley:

Lots of singers and bands, who were first introduced in the Eurovision, became very famous thanks to this international platform, and lots of songs written for the Eurovision, were turned into hits overnight.

To accept this month challenge, you will need to use, in your mash, at least one song which took part in the Eurovision (including this year), OR, you can choose any song (not necessarily related to the Eurovision), sang by Eurovision's performers.

Here are some usfull related links:
List of entries in the Eurovision Song Contest (Artists and songs for each year)
8 huge stars who you probably totally forgot were involved in Eurovision
List of Eurovision Song Contest winners
10 Best Eurovision Song Contest Winners Of All Time
Eurovision: Celine Dion, ABBA, Julio Iglesias, and other famous performers

Good luck :1wink:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE 5-STEP DESCRIPTION:

At the start of every month, the (newly entitled) Emperor of MashStix posts a thread containing details of the challenge, for Example: 'Mashups 90bpm or slower with the theme of love'. They should also include the '5-Step Description' and the 'FAQ'.
The post will then shortly be stickied to the top of the 'Submit Mashups' section for all to see and respond to with their entries. Entries must be in by the 20th.
A vote will be created within that thread for everyone to vote on who should win and become the new Emperor (the vote can be created by the current emperor so please don't wait for a mod to do it as we are a busy people)
On the 27th (or a day of the month at the current emperor's choice) the poll shall end and the new emperor will be chosen.

The winning track will then be featured on the Frontpage!

FAQ:

> How should I post my mashup?
Entries are to be posted in the thread using the players in the same way as you would on the main Mashstix board (i.e. via Dropbox, Hearthis, SoundCloud or your own webspace), including details of the tracks used.

> Can I use a mashup that I've made previously?
No, that would be cheating!

> What if there is a tie!?
All ties will be settled by the Emperor (sounds like a worthy title now, doesn't it?)

> I didn't win, what can I do with my mashup?
If you are particularly proud of your mashup but didn't win then feel free to post your mashup in the 'Submit Mashup' section as you ordinarily would.

> What do I do if I'm confused??
Private Message one of the moderators for assistance. Start with the Emperor.

> So the Emperor gets to choose the next challenge and settle a tiebreaker, anything else?
The Emperor will attain limitless glory for all of eternity (and bragging rights)

SMASH, can you give those of us who aren't as familiar with this contest some links and more details as to who these artists are that competed?

Just some ideas on Eurovision songs:
- many great artists (ABBA for Sweden) started their career on the Eurovision, others appeared later in their career (Anouk for the Netherlands), other songs of these artists are totally different. Could be good to point out in a mashup.
- theme of the songs is usually cooperation, love, peace (Ein bisschen Frieden), being happy (Making your mind up), could be a good contrast with heavier/angrier lyrics
- sometimes the number two of the contest becomes the real commercial winner (I believe 'congratulations' by Cliff Richard is an example)
- there was a time when countries had to submit in their own language, so from a lot of songs there exist two vocals: one original and one in English (for the international market). Also there are parodies in other countries, with totally different lyrics.
- 'puppet on a string' was performed barefooted (on Europe-wide television ! OMG !! :1grin: ) the horror.
- In my opinion in later years, video (= how it looks) killed the Eurovision radio start (how it sounds). And added public voting, not just professional juries from participating countries, via text messages and later mobile apps has a big influence on the winners in the last years. So the older winners (and participants) provide the better/more musical 'songs'. Last year the winner was dressed like a chicken. A few years ago, the winner was a transvestite (nothing wrong with that) with a BEARD :1undecided:
- it is called Eurovision, but Israel and Australia also participate (and Israel won a number of times) for instance: Hallelujah (by Milk and Honey)

Thank you, CSV, for the deep review :1smiley:

Are we going to see some entries in this contest?
I don't think it is too hard to find sources for this challenge :1undecided:
Please let me know if you have trouble to find any.
