Dj Legato - California peanut butter jelly gurls

Sources:
Galantis - Peanut butter jelly (instrumental)
Katy Perry - California gurls (acapella)

Hi! I was working on this A+B mash, but i cant get this to fit right in the mix.
Saw that MG was talking about a "punch hole trick" on the instrumental
in this post http://www.mashstix.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=24681
But i have tried every trick i could come up with, but it still sounds crappy :1sad:
I was actually going to scrap this, but i still think there is something about this combo that makes me want to finnish it..

Any form of help would be great, thanks :1smiley:

It’s because it’s an excellent combo! But I know what you mean about the mix :1sad:

I would start by turning the vocals up considerably. The Galantis song has much louder vocals. Beyond that, I’m not sure what I’d suggest other than running spectral analysis and try to figure out where the conflicting frequencies are, but it sounds like you’ve already down that to some degree, right?

I would think HCD would have some ideas about how to mix this one. Where you at, cat?

It's already a pretty good mix.

Turning the vocal up 0.2-0.5dB would do the trick.
As far a punching a hole in the instrumental, we're only talking about a 1-2dB reduction around the vocal range. I'm guessing your range here would be about 800-1100. If you can't find the sweet spot, sweep your EQ upwards until you here the vocal clarity drown out and get lost in the instrumental. That will be were the hole needs to be.

Thanks a lot for this constructive feedback, you are the best :1cool:

I did increase the vocals a bit by compressing them more, i also widened slightly
Then i eased off the gate and instead went over the whole vocal track and cut out all the bips and bumps sounds from the diy.

This helped, found somewhat a sweetspot and decreased it by 0,9db :1wink:

On the creative side i added some more snoop vocals and some vocoder parts to the bridge.

Hope you guys like this a little bit better, i know i do :1smiley:

That's an awesome combo! Really love it and the mix is also quite good now. :1cool:

If you want to try something more sophisticated to improve your mix, you could use a multiband compressor on your instrumental track. Then just side-chain the vocal signal to duck the frequencies in the mental according to the volume of the vocals. This should give you even better results and preserves the energy of the mental more than a "static" EQ.

One more question: Will there be an extended DJ version? I'd like to play this one live! :1wink:

Did you want to give this a try to perfect this mix? I am more than ready to FP this in its current state...

I'll give MashGyver the honors of putting this on the FP. Very fun!
