As genre clashes go, this one is great. Guaranteed to get you lynched at a QOTSA fan club meeting, this mashup goes to show there's a thin blurry line between Josh Homme, and say... Michael Buble. Josh sounds like a wannabe crooner with the fifties-style backing, which was originally designed for Amy Winehouse. Ronson and Homme make an entertaining match, and despite a couple of troublesome notes (e.g. 2:19), this mashup holds together well enough - especially in the choruses -so the listener can forgive its infrequent melodic transgressions.
Cons:
The track starts on an odd beat, and the indiscernible vox at 0:20 doesn't help to bring it online. In fact the first 40 seconds had me wondering what was going on. The acapella is also a bit too quiet throughout, and it could do with with some echo to engage it better with the kitschy instrumental. Some of your vocal placements could be tighter too (e.g. 1:15).
Tips:
This mashup could be absolute GOLD. I suggest you use the Amy Winehouse count-in from the original "Valerie" track, and experiment with the rest of your 40 second intro. After that, turn Mr Homme up by about 0.5 to 1dB, and use an echo on him like they used on the original Amy Winehouse "Valerie" vocals.
