This is the last Mashstix Alternative Show. I like to personally thank G3RST for the amazing job he's done with the show (don't worry he's not leaving the team)
There is some good news with the bad however, as The Radio Stix Show will be back in full swing with a whole new crew... keep your eyes peeled! - Paul Stix
Phil Retro Spector is well known for his signature style of bitter-sweet harmonic combinations and often epic melancholic mash-ups. This track is a fitting addition to his oeuvre and in a blindfold test I would have easily guessed Phil produced it. The Motown melody of Ruffin's hit sits perfectly with the alternative indie-pop of Snow Patrol and results in a pensive, yet engaging, listening experience of love's labors lost.
Cons:
I'm not a big Snow Patrol fan, and find the repetitive chord progression to be a bit on the boring side, but Ruffin's soulful vocals more than make up for it.
Tips:
"But I have that within which passes show, These but the trappings and the suits of woe." (Hamlet) Keep on bringing the beautiful melancholy, but beware its deadly seduction. ;-)
There isn’t much you can say about this except its superb.
The King of Chill should be Phil’s other name. He makes some of the best mashups you will ever hear and always top quality, although if your looking for a dance floor filler this probably isn’t for you unless you want people to lie down on the dance floor and be extremely happy and chilled, which is what this track does to you.
But don’t take my word for it, click the play button and listen or better still go and download it, then go sit in the sun with a glass of chilled wine and listen to it over and over again and just relax. Who needs stress medication when there’s mashups like this?
Cons:
Well there is one tiny one, a couple of the vocals seem to start a little off key, but only very slightly and after a couple of listens it stopped bothering me. I think its more to do with the original vocal being slightly off anyway? And it never bothered me in the original tracks either and looking at the post in the forum I noticed Phil also acknowledged it, but as I said it is just a very very tiny criticism not something that would stop me listening to an otherwise excellent mashup.
Tips:
Perfection is hardly ever achieved and I only ever tip taxi drivers as a rule
As I lay here on this cold Sunday morning wishing I hadnt over done it with the shots last night, I suddenly remembered I have a track to review.
A fine hangover cure it is to boot (if you pardon the pun). ; )
I don't usually listen to Beatles mashups because to be honest I don't think there are any good ones about. So I would have been very critical of this if I hadnt of liked it.
Everything works as you would expect with a Phil track, and whats more ............. there is a beat in it !!!
Cons:
Not your fault, I just wish you had a better quality acapella to work with. For me, all the Beatles acapella's available lack the fullness of what we all heard in the original composistions.
Tips:
The Lone Ranger was a long-running early radio and television show based on a masked cowboy in the American Old West. Tonto greets the Lone Ranger with the expression "kemosabe", which has also been written "Kemo Sabe" or "Kemo Sabhay". The origin of this expression is somewhat unclear, but James Jewell, an early director of the radio series, said the name comes from a boy's camp located on Mullett Lake, Michigan.
The translation was said to mean "trusty scout." So there you go !
I woke up this morning to a sunny snow filled winter wonderland, a steaming hot cup of tea and ethereal mash master Phil Retro Spector's latest mash, lovely. Taken from the Culture Bully 2009 Mashed album (www.culturebully.com), this silky sweet mix of reggae and electronica is one of the most polished mashes I've ever heard and is the perfect tune to wake up to.
Cons:
The only negative is that all mashups don't sound this good. sit back, close your eyes, let this into your soul and give it 5 stars now.
Philretrospector brings the grown-up mash up once again.
Beautiful tune that deserves to be listened to by candlelight. Or when you're dying. (in a good way...)
Anyone wanting to know what people mean when they talk about having your own style should look no further than Phil's site.
Cons:
Listened to this a good few times and to change any of it would make it less than what it is now. No cons, people will either like it or they won't.
Tips:
None.
It's been emotional.

It seems like these songs were made for each other! Amazing how all the chords match. Hearing La Roux's lyrics in a completely different setting is a breath of air to say the least. Another excellent mashup from Phil R. - get this in your ears, folks!
Cons:
No real cons - the only thing that is a bit noticeable is the lower quality of the a capella, but you did a good job masking that with reverb effects and such.
Tips:
Who am I to give you tips?! This is excellent!

Just what we have come to expect from Phil. Massive ambiance coupled with haunting vocals. From a production point of view, everything is staggeringly good. The tracks mastering in particular is great, I would love to know how you manage to produce the quality you do, track after track. The Idol vocal fits like a glove, and even gives the white haired rocker a chilled out sound.
Hot off the press: Phil is to release his debut album, entitled Introversion soon. Time to clear some space on your Ipod !
Cons:
I can’t find any, listen to it, and see if you can.
Tips:
Give Paul & I a sneak preview of your album, not really a tip so much as a plead.....ha

This is an exceptional mash, you have kept the quality of work, which is your "presentation card". The fusion of the elements of the mash are perfectly mixed, Harmonically, track tempo and audio quality, you bring back a great David Bowie song. I have to say I really enjoy your work dude.
Cons:
I don’t have so much to say I really enjoy this track, perhaps the vocal is a little bit lower than I'd like at (2:37- 2:52) but thats all.
Tips:
Nothing at all :)

(Leonard Cohen vs. Muse vs.
Le Mystere de Voix Bulgares)
This is everything I would expect from one of your tracks - lush, cinematic, beautifully crafted and desperately sad. Like the best Radiohead track that never was. One of your best videos to date too.
Cons:
The lack of well-known artists may keep some from listening to this but please people, give it a chance - you won't be sorry.
Tips:
Somewhere, there's an arthouse cinema that plays only Phil RetroSpector videos. People come in out of the rain to sit in the plush red chairs and spend a few hours soaking in the atmosphere, occasionally wiping their tears away on the back of their sleeves. If there isn't such a place, you should definitely consider opening one.
**Note From Paul Stix: In my opinion, Phil is the only person in the world who can capture such intense emotion through music. If this piece of art doesn't move you in any way, shape or form, than you can't possibly be human. Awesome review Gav!!

Love the combo. It's very inspired I think. Something for the youngsters & also for the eldsters. Your mixing is so very pleasing. They inhabit the same soundscape wonderfully. Great use of the keih richards geetar solo.
Cons:
If I wanted to be nit-picky, you could add the a hint of compression, but I realize these highs are the current sound that people expect. This is literally a flawless track.
Tips:
A drink's ingredients should be added into the blender first, then the ice. Although you can use ice cubes, crushed ice blends easier. Oops,I wandered into another area of mixing.

(Johny Cash Remix)
Without a shadow of a doubt, this is one HELL of a good remix Phil. I was aurally hypnotized from start to finish - captivated by it's swirling darkness and mood. I was instantly reminded of all the cool ambient bits that made acts such as DJ Shadow, Nine Inch Nails & Aphex Twin so enjoyable and darkly relaxing to listen to. The Sissy Spacek samples are a lovely touch as well - never intrusive, but sitting just right. I can see this scoring a Credit sequence to some big Tarantino movie quite nicely. Natural Born Killers? Very much so. The video is also beautifully produced adding to the tracks already mysteriously ambient quality.
Cons:
Not *technically* a Mashup ~ but who cares when you are producing such rich, deep and emotional music to this standard.
Tips:
N/A as such - though if your Mashups share the same flair of creativity as your own Productions, then I'm pretty sure you know your beans Sir!
