This is the last Mashstix Alternative Show. I like to personally thank G3RST for the amazing job he's done with the show (don't worry he's not leaving the team)
There is some good news with the bad however, as The Radio Stix Show will be back in full swing with a whole new crew... keep your eyes peeled! - Paul Stix
When I first saw Miley Cyrus on this track, well, lets just say I was a little worried. Luckily, the Jason Nevins remix is the instrumental so it can't be too bad right? Turns out none of that matters, because this track rocks from the first beat! I freakin' love this tune...it makes me wish I was still DJing just so I could play this song to a crowd! Sting's vocal over the Cyrus 'mental, with a dash of distinctive Soft Cell, this killer mash will have appeal from the airwaves to the dancefloor and everywhere in between!
Yeah! This mashup just feels right. By taking the cure's "Lullaby" as the base of this mashup, LeeDM101 transformed the rock-pop track everything is everything into a smooth ride back to the 80's. And even though i've heard the lullaby track so many times, the pella of Phoenix sounds just like it belongs there. Great job again Lee!
Cons:
I've listened to this track many times on different sound systems and the only (tiny tiny) con that i come up with is the level of the pella. Level it down just a notch and i think it blends in even better.
Now, here's me starting to feel guilty and formulating my apologies for letting this review slip to the second page, when I look three doors down and see that LeeDM101 is worse than me in his 'non-review' of the Geeggz mash!! ;o) Anyways, LeeDM101 goes all chilled out (or should that be chilling?) on this mash by mixing the Dexter Blood theme with the vocals from Dirty South and Coldplay. And what a great mash this is - the pace and atmosphere of the track works really well. The vocals sit neatly on the mental - with just enough reverb and echo on them to make them slight haunting and distant (in a good way!). Alls well in the world.
Cons:
Neat artwork and great production - just as we have come to expect from LeeDM101. No Cons that I can think of.
Tips:
...it would be like Hong Kong Phooey teaching Bruce Lee how to master the Praying Mantis... I don't think so...
LeeDM101 did it again - he took the Queens Of The Stone Age classic 'Make It Witchu' and smacked it on another classic by The Chemical Brothers: 'Do It Again'. Not only is it quite a feat to make something dancable out of a QOTSA song, this mix also sounds very crisp and clear and gives the Chemical Brothers song more of an eerie feel. A clear cut case of 1+1=3.
Cons:
The only con I can think of is that although this mix sounds great, the sources aren't a match made in heaven. The chorus works great, but although the verses are all in key, they do give the impression of belonging to another song. Mind you, this is very subjective nitpicking - brought up when I have nothing left to rant about. Hehehe... ;)
Tips:
I can't give you any tips - you're one of the top producers out there, and you know it. ;) Keep up the great work!
An incredibly relaxing, professional done mash. Although very different from the usual upbeat dance mashups we see, it is still a great mix. These songs sound like they are meant for each other, and you surely took advantage of it. I see this as something people will listen to when they need to relax, it worked for me haha.
Cons:
Nothing really to criticize, you nailed it! With a 4.5 (before my 5), I think people agree with me.
Tips:
You don't need any mixing tips, keep it up. I'm glad your not afraid to mix something that the average masher wouldn't touch.
If Carling made mashups...
not Lees usual banging uber-kool beats, but a caramel creme slush puppy of a mashup, that made me go 'ah bless' at the end.
a perfect mashup for getting into the pants of emotionaly damaged women.
Cons:
I'm taking a biro with me to the polling station on election day, crossing out all the names on the ballot and writing 'I vote you LeeDM101' on it.
Tips:
Not many people know this, but Lee is not 1 person but 3; Hank Marvin, Andy Peters and Dephnie from Daphnie and Celeste.
I've never heard this Plump DJs track before but the heavily processed vocals of "Beat Myself Up" are right up my street. They work a treat here and bring a much-needed edge to an otherwise rather understated Muse song.
Cons:
This may be one of the simplest tracks you've released recently but even here there's nothing to find with fault with. The production is beautifully clear and the mix of Muse vocal and instrumental elements is seamless.
Tips:
You just keep firing out one great track after another like a mashup machine gun - how do you do it? Whatever your secret is, don't lose it.
I find this tune rather appealing - I've always been a fan of Massive Attack. This is the sort of track you can sit down and really chill out to. The DM vocals (especially In Chains) work a treat and the inclusion of the Assault on Precinct 13 theme is inspired.
As usual Lee, you've produced an expertly mastered piece which is highly listenable. I'm really enjoying your stuff of late mate, keep it up.
Cons:
I defy anyone to find fault with any of Lee's tunes. Always top notch gear!
Tips:
Keep finding those left of centre sources bud - they make great mashes and addictive listening.
Lee has well established himself as one of the scenes elite's. In fact this year (well so far) I would say Lee is second only to one other person.
I like producers who whilst you know your going to hear something good, you can't quite slim them into a certain genre bracket.
Everything in this boot, is comparable to that made in a £300 per hour studio. The effects are well timed and add to the mash, and the vocals work with the instrumental very well. The entire production gives the impression that it is an official remix of the Sugababes track. It really wouldn't surprise me if you were asked to remix for a label shortly.
Cons:
The only things wrong with this is there isn't an extended version for DJ's to use in the club, and the end cuts off a little premature.
Tips:
Don't email Gara Gara when he is battered in a small club in Edinburgh !
I see Paul gave this one to the right reviewer since, well... I'm a big fan of Nine Inch Nails, and 'Beginning Of The End' is just a fabulous track.
LeeDM101''s "Nine Inch Monkey" is a very cool combo indeed, and I must say Peter Gabriel's vocals fit the backing track amazingly well here. They give the mashup a bit of an eerie feel, which is a very good thing. After two and a half cool minutes, it's already over, but it just shows I enjoyed it. Sound quality and production are good on this tune too.
Cons:
Of course, there are a few cons here. There are some off-key moments (at the beginning of each verse) and -sorry- the running time of two and a half minutes is a bit of an issue too.. since, you know - I would have loved to hear more of the tune. Then the ending is a bit abrupt, which is a bit pity.
Tips:
Apart from the points made above, which could improve this already very nice mashup, I just couldn't help but think there must be other Peter Gabriel songs that would go with this backing track - 'Steam' for instance would've fit this track very well too imo - you could give it a try. ;)
Anyways, keep bringing us combos like these, since I really enjoy them, as I did this track.
Typical! I've been working on a Linkin Park - New Divide mash, then Mashstix gives me one to review! ;o) They're like buses (as they say up North). Anyhow, if mines anyway near as good as this mash from LeeDM101 (does that mean ur from Leeds and you live somewhere near the M1?), I'll be a very happy parrot. This mash puts Linkin Park in a laid back dance mood - with plenty of euphoric dance feelings to it. I'm not familiar with Dead Can Dance, so not entirely sure where they fit into the mash, but good work - I like it.
Cons:
None really. All on time and on key - no problems there. Are Chester's vocals a little quiet, especially towards the start of the mash? It's probably my hears again - need to stop listening to loud music!
Tips:
You've been at this game longer than I. I wouldn't dare! ;o)
There's a bleakness to R.E.M.'s "The One I Love", which often gets misinterpreted as a love song. There can be no mistaking the feeling behind the lyrics in this version. The piano loop brings a brooding sadness to Michael Stipe's vocals, stripping the song down to its emotional core. The whole track has been constructed beautifully, and would sit perfectly alongside Phil RetroSpector's most melancholic mashes.
Cons:
There's not one thing I can pick apart here. Every element works well together, and I couldn't pick out where the sample ends and your own input begins. Heck, even the artwork is spot on.
Tips:
Over the past year you've done some of the most interesting and impressive mashups out there, covering a wide range of styles and genres. There's no need for me to give you any tips - I'm the one taking notes!
Damn i lost count during previewing this mini-mega-mix. Great job on fitting all those tracks in just 3:30 minutes. I am pleased to see more and more producers creating these kind of "mega-mashups" and as far as i know this is the first time you've combined this many artists in one track. It really shows what you're technically capable of combining so many tracks without a single glitch.
You've also did a great job of fitting in some "edit cuts" and creating a wide stereo image by cutting and panning vocals to L & R.
Cons:
Missing sample / tracklist is the only con, but since you've lost your original Acid file there's only the "vicious virus attack" to blame (as stated on your blog)
This is one of those mash-ups that just fits like a glove from the get-go, even if one wouldn't expect these two sources being combined: impeccable matching, mixing and production. And this wouldn't have been half as great had it been the other way around (with Britney's vox): I love KoL's wailing over these beats, and the great job you did on vocal processing and glitching, putting in the extra work to make this sound like an official remix. A well-deserved #1 on the RadioStix countdown!
Cons:
None. This is perfect.
Tips:
Tips? None for you mate. I really appreciate your approach and how you turn slightly off-the-wall combinations into bona fide bangers.
